So your watching the TV with the usual B movie action films, same boring predictable storyline. Boy meets girl, girl gets kidnapped, MI5 undercover cop with an unconventional style chases the clues and inevitably rescues her. Are you bored yet?
Try the following instead. These are the undiscovered Gems you may never have heard of. From brilliant acting to just plain surreal.
1. Dark City
Mystery is in the air! All the elements of a classic murder mystery in a film noir style, but there is a twist. From the director of The Crow this is a strange sort of unassuming film overshadowed by the release of the Matrix. As brilliant as the Matrix was however, this is a film to last the years.
2. Re-Cycle
You never know what to expect with an Asian film. Literally your dreams come true but not in the way you might think. This movie starts off as a simple ghost story, but not all is as it seems, like a maze of strange occurrences and artistic brilliant around every corner it will surprise and inspire you.
3. Amelie
A beautiful film. Colourful is a word for every scene it portrays. Even vintage for its French sun drenched tones. If you like the occasional romantic film that hits all the right notes then this is for you.
4. The Devils Backbone
Surely you’ve heard of Pan’s Labyrinth. Before that Guillermo del Toro created a little film about a ghost. With a truly atmospheric setting and things that go bump in the night this is not for children although it is set in an orphanage. Unforgettable!
5. Mirror Mask
For those who love Tim Burton. Have you heard of Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman? Brilliant artist and writer this team of great creators have brought to life a world of unusual creatures, folds of paper form the fabric of the walls and dark shadows containing facinating mysteries.
6. Coraline
Another great books to film from Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman. Wonderful to watch just for its animation alone, but mainly aimed a younger audience. The black cat it’s the star of the show!
7. The Illusionist
If you’re in the mood for a little magic and romance, an unusual combination but it works. The Prestige was released at the same time as this.
8. Endhiran
Looking for some Asian action. Think iRobot but with a dash of daftness. It’s not for everyone but it’s got everything for everyone. Bollywood and action with the most amazing specially effects they look totally awesome and impossible.
9. Nightwatch
Gothic Russian Vampire Horror Drama. Dark and gritty this fantasy thriller will keep you hooked from night till day. With totally weird special effects it’s captivating edge of the seat stuff.
10. Bloodlust Vampire D
Like Graphic Novels? Styalisted action packed and a little bit of gory drama every scene is a work of art.
